Dead Reckoning (39°)

Part of The Crown Beneath the Waves Project (2026)

Loss of the State Vessel Trinco
17 October 1682 (traditionally accepted date)

Returning to Alca following a continental ceremonial voyage, the Trinco encountered a prolonged storm while approaching the southern coast. Based on later reconstruction using weather records, lighthouse accounts associated with the tradition of the Last Passing, and modern archaeological evidence, the vessel is understood to have been lost off Divers’ Bay on or about 17 October 1682, now regarded as the traditionally accepted date of loss.
